I doubt they were made for tournaments (they almost certainly predate gambling tournaments). I found a set of chips at a garage sale years ago and sold most to someone in Texas. I sold a number to collectors before I sold the bulk of them. Strangely, there were two distinct colors of one of the chips, orange and brown.
