Doc Holliday packed a lot of wild living into his 36 years on earth and became
one of the legendary figures of the old wild west. He originally set up practice
as a licensed dentist in Atlanta at age 21, but soon contracted tuberculosis and
moved to the desert southwest hoping the climate would relieve his symptoms.
Holliday became an itinerant gambler, moving from town to town and state to
state in search of the perfect poker game. Along the way he got into several
scrapes with the law and other gamblers and acquired the reputation of being
fast with a gun. At some point while in Texas, Holliday saved the life of Wyatt
Earp and they became good friends. In 1881 at age 30 Holliday participated
(along with the Earps) in the legendary shootout at the O.K. Corral. He later
moved to Colorado where he died of TB in 1887 at age 36.
Doc Holliday has been portrayed dozens of times in movies and TV shows, most
notably by Val Kilmer, Dennis Quaid, and Jason Robards... and he even shows
up on a casino/poker chip from time to time!
