The 50th anniversary of the moon landing brought to mind a character I met in Winnemucca
around 1970. His name was Charlie Norris and was working as a shill at TJ's Dirty Bird casino.
Charlie would hang around the casino drinking a can of Miller High Life while waiting to be called
to the lone 21 table. He designed a token showing the moon landing on one side and the birth
of Christ on the other, claiming those to be the two greatest events in history. He even filed
a legal notice at the Humboldt County courthouse claiming ownership of one square mile of the
moon with the flag at the center. Charlie also worked at the Model T truckstop which probably
explains why they used his moonlanding design on their gaming token. If you look closely,
you can see his signature.
