Credit to Tom Henderson out of Mississippi with tracking this down.
I don't like being that guy who identifies new chips because of slight color variations, but I think this one might be legit.
I've had this chip in my collection for many years - not terribly scarce.
So Tom finds this guy in New Orleans who had some chips, among them was a box of these Dakin Street $10 chips. On the box was stamped "White". I had always marked mine as "gray" and so I did a quick little check on the Jones records and found a couple ordered for this chip - one marked "white", the other marked "gray".
Order from 1963 marked "gray":
Earlier order from 1960 marked "white":
As you can see, whoever got the records originally wrote "checks are really Grey in color".
So I started thinking, were they really gray? Or were there two orders and one we just didn't know about?
So Tom drove down to the guy's house and picked up a couple chips from the "white" box. To him, they did look gray, but nothing would be settled until I got mine and they were put side by side.
When they arrived, I was a little disappointed that they weren't a bright white versus my medium gray, but I do think there is enough difference to state them as different chips.
My old "medium gray" one versus the new "off white" variety:
The scan isn't doing it a lot of justice. The difference is obvious in real light.
I usually don't like jumping to conclusions on attributes or subtle difference in chips, but I think this might have a couple things going for it.
1) There is a whole box of these lighter chips, not just one or two, all the same shade.
2) There are two distinct orders, years apart, one stating "white" the other "gray".
3) The box these came in said "white".
So I'm saying its two variations.
