HARVEST STORIES NOTES[yh/]
I ALSO WOULD LIKE TO THINK THAT IN SHARING THESE STORIES, THERE MIGHT BE A COUPLE OF THINGS THAT YOU MAY NOT OF THOUGHT ABOUT WHILE YOU WERE OUT HARVESTING.
ALL OF THE STORIES CAN NOT BE STELLAR STORIES, AND THEY WILL RANGE FROM “HO-HUM” TO “R U KIDDIN’ ME”. I’M SURE SOME OF YOU WILL FIND SOME OF THEM SLIGHTLY AMUSING AND ENTERTAINING.
SOME OF THE REASONS THAT I ENJOYED HARVESTING IS THE LOCATIONS AND THE GEOGRAPHY. BUT, MOST OF ALL I LOVED THE HISTORY OF THE AREAS I HAD TO GO TO IN FINDING THE CHIPS.
MY TRAVELS HAVE TAKEN ME THROUGH ALL OF THE LOWER 48 STATES. I ALSO TRAVELED TO MANY PROVINCES IN CANADA, MANY OF THE ISLANDS IN THE CARIBBEAN AND PARTS OF EUROPE.
PLEASE KNOW, THAT IN WRITING THESE STORIES; IT GIVES ME GREAT PLEASURE TO SHARE MY EXPERIENCES HARVESTING. NOW-A-DAYS MOST OF MY TRAVELING IS DONE BY PLANE OR BOAT.
I AM TRYING TO HAVE A GUEST AUTHOR ON EVERY POST, ALSO. THIS WILL ADD SOME DIFFERENT TWISTS TO THIS FUN HOBBY’S HARVESTING TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS.
I HOPE EVERYONE ENJOYS THESE SHORT STORIES FOR WHAT THEY ARE, A MEMORY OF PAST YEARS OF FUN AND RECREATION.
AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST, SHOULD YOU FIND A TYPO, OR A BLATANT MIS-SPELLING OF A WORD, OR TERRIBLE GRAMMAR, PLMK.
THANK YOU FOR READING MY GUEST AUTHOR’S AND MY PERSONAL HARVEST STORIES…REGGIE
A HARVEST STORY BY A GUEST AUTHOR
PIONEER CROSSING – YERINGTON, NV
BY – JAMES ERIC FREEDNER
I have a funny harvesting story from the Pioneer Crossing in out there. You might as well have it, with some Western jargon thrown in here and there, pardner.
When I went to the P. C. last summer (2014), I found all of two tables open (think the casino has four in all). So I moseyed up to one and asked the young lady if I could buy a few dollar and five-dollar chips. And to my happiness, she said, sure! So I bought a good amount (maybe 10 of the $1 and five of the $5), then ambled over to the buffet for dinner. I was growing hungry, it was around 6:30 and I figgered I might not make it back to "civilized" Carson City or Reno in time for their buffets. To my surprise, I found Pioneer Crossing had a decent spread - including crab legs, prime rib, turkey I think, and all the fixin's. I guess it's one of the few such places in town (don't know if Lucky Club offers similar grub). Reasonable prices, too, think it was mebbe $15. And some real cowboys dining there, too!
Well, sir, after dinner, I walked around town a bit, and that's when I sort of sashayed into Dini's and saw their one-armed bandits. So I walked back to Pioneer Crossing to mount up my trusty steed, Tamoca. And the idea hit me, maybe I should try for a $25 chip from Pioneer Crossing, certainly it might be a rarity. So I went to the other table (blackjack) where I saw some green chips and asked that dealer if I could buy one.
"Certainly not!" she retorted (in a voice loud enough for the first dealer and all the players to overhear). "If you buy a chip you have to play it. WE DON'T SELL TO COLLECTORS, EVER!"
And this tenderfoot just sort of limped on outta there...feeling truly hurt - as I had rather generously patronized the establishment. And then rode off into the sunset.
PERSONAL HARVESTING STORIES
CRIPPLE CREEK, COLORADO SITS AT THE BASE OF PIKE’S PEAK. IT IS ABOUT 50 MILES FROM COLORADO SPRINGS. I WAS ON A ROAD TRIP WITH MY YOUNGEST SON KEN. NANCY HAD WENT TO HAWAII WITH ONE OF HER GIRLFRIENDS (KARLYE). KARLYE WAS ONE OF THE WELCOMING GIRLS ON MR. ROARK’S FANTASY ISLAND. SO MY SON AND I WENT ON A ROAD TRIP, THIS PART OF THE TRIP; STARTED OUT AT ASPEN WHERE WE STAYED OVER NIGHT. HE WANTED TO TAKE HIS NEW MUSTANG OVER INDEPENDENCE PASS, ONE OF IF NOT THE HIGHEST ROAD PASS IN THE US AND THEN IT SNOWED. (IT WAS IN LATE JUNE) WE ENDED UP IN CRIPPLE CREEK. IN THIS TOWN YOU CAN WALK UP ONE SIDE OF BENNET STREET AND DOWN THE OTHER AND HIT VIRTUALLY EVER CASINO IN 3 BLOCKS OF THE GAMBLING TOWN OF CRIPPLE CREEK.
THIS WAS DONE IN A LITTLE LESS THAN A DAY. I KNOW I HIT THE FOLLOWING CASINOS: BILLY’S, DOUBLE EAGLE, ELK CREEK (ANTIQUE STORE FIND), JP MCGILLS, JOHNNY NOLAN’s, MIDNIGHT ROSE, WILD HORSE SALOON #2, WILDWOOD & WOMACKS. WE STAYED OVER NIGHT AT WOMACKS HOTEL.
I PICKED UP A FEW HANDS IN THE MIDNIGHT ROSE, THE WEATHER GOT CRAZY, COLD WIND AND A HARD RAIN, WHICH STOPPED MY SON FROM TAKING ON PIKE’S PEAK.
I NEVER HAD A BIT OF TROUBLE WITH ANY OF THE CASINOS IN CRIPPLE CREEK, AND AS A MATTER FACT WHILE AT THE WOMACKS, I HAD A CONVERSATION WITH A VERY NICE DEALER AND PIT BOSS. THEY POINTED OUT TO ME THAT WOMACKS WAS THE ONLY CASINO IN TOWN AT THAT TIME THAT HAD $2.50 CHIPS, I BOUGHT 8. I WISH I HAD BOUGHT MORE…REGGIE
