The Stockbridge-Munsee’s North Star Casino Resort opened in 1992.
Older article but interesting background news. 12/01/2017 Stockbridge-Munsee continue legal fight over Ho-Chunk Casino in Wittenberg that opened in 2008
A judge threw out the lawsuit and the Wittenberg casino has been expanded to include a hotel. Currently the Bowler casino has refused to pay the $1 Million a yearr to the state, and claims the Ho-Chunk competition will cost them $22 Million dollars a year.
I have some questions about how much the Stockbridge-Munsee profit a year, how long they can hold back the $1 million a year payments. Seems like the state isn't getting a fair share of the taxes that would be due from any other business operation. I have a copy of one of the original compacts but we have had various government changes and negotiations to change these.
On the other side, Ho-Chunk that has casinos all over the state seem to be managing them well and making profits which enable them to improve and expand.
The Stockbridge-Munsee Mohican Tribe is one of 11 tribes in Wisconsin and has approximately 1,470 tribal members throughout the state, 34 percent of whom live on the tribe’s reservation in Shawano County. The Stockbridge-Munsee Tribe is the largest employer in Shawano County and operates the North Star Mohican Casino Resort, which features 1,200 slot machines and 22 table games. The Tribe is committed to being a good steward of economic, environmental and intellectual resources in the region and strongly believes in the power of education. Each year, the Stockbridge-Munsee Tribe contributes more than $100,000 in funding to the area’s two largest school districts and more than $200,000 to support neighboring communities and other Wisconsin Indian tribes. 08/27/2016 - Groundbreaking, I hope it went well, I couldn't find more news. The Stockbridge-Munsee Tribe will break ground Friday for a 12,000-square-foot retail center on state Highway 22 in the town of Belle Plaine. The tribe said the $1.3 million project is aimed at spurring growth throughout the area.
Just can't wait to go through that area again. I enjoyed the Bowler casino a few times, it's not on the main highways I'd use to get around the state.
