The President of the Philippines, Ferdinand Marcos, celebrated the New Year by assisting his wife in opening yet another casino in Manila.
The new casino is billed as a "floating casino" and was constructed aboard a former Norwegian cruiser.
The floating casino was acquired by the Philippine Government in a joint venture with private interests headed by the Macao "Casino King" Mr. Stanley Ho.
The casino cost more than four million dollars U.S. (more than two and a half million pounds sterling) to build, and was constructed under the authorisation of President Marcos, as a tourist attraction.
The proceeds from the floating casino will be used "to assist Manila City's massive flood control programme".
The new casino is named the "Philippine Tourist" and will be moored in Manila Bay.
At the opening ceremony on New Year's Day, President Marcos and his wife Imelda, were accompanied by the Italian actress, Gina Lollobrigida.
