All who offer "combined shipping" need to be very careful how to explain this. I see it as combining two auction lots (be it one chip or many) for one shipping cost. This works well enough for purchases of single chips, where I can stuff three or four chips in a mailer and still send out for a flat-rate shipping cost. Which is always appreciated by the buyer.
Now, what if you're selling Steinway Pianos? You cannot ship two of those for the price of one. Here, Mark apparently was selling sets of chips or some combination that added considerable weight to the parcel in question. The solution would have been to carefully explain in the listing, something like: "I can ship five chips for one price. For purchases of over five chips, the shipping cost will be $_____ (or, I will calculate the total shipping and let the buyer know). IF THERE ARE ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT SHIPPING COST FOR MULTIPLE LOTS, PLEASE CONTACT ME BEFORE BIDDING.
Understanding what one's getting into goes a long way toward resolving issues of this sort and hopefully reduces the "nasty surprise" factor of bidding.
