I'm sure there some abuses in the horse industry but as someone who lives in the Horse Capital of the world, Lexington Kentucky I can tell you the racing horses are treated better than any animal I can imagine. You can look at horses such as Secretariat and Alydar who were put down because of pain from an injury or disease. At the time Calumet put Alydar down his stud fee was $250,000 per mare for a live foal or $175,000 per mare no guarantee. Secretariat also had a high stud fee but was put down because of pain in his hoof. These farms show they care more about the health of the horse than the money. At the time these horses were put down they were bred about 62 times per season (today it's 100-150+). That's a lot of money thy lose by putting the horse down.
I have been on some the biggest horse farms in the world and have friends in the industry and I know how well these horses are taken care of.
As I said there may be abuses but they are very few and certainly not with the high price horses around here.
