The original MGM suffered a horrid fire in the mid 1980s which left a good number of people dead (mostly from smoke inhalation). The fire and hotel are significant because it pointed out that the hotel industry did not have nearly enough smoke detectors, fire extinguishers and were inept at fire emergency plans. This disaster changed the thinking in the industry and we’re all quite a bit safer because of it.
