NCR Convention Bound Day 15

Even while visiting friends we were able to visit a cemetery. For those of you who are not familiar with Fargo, or only know of Fargo through the movie or TV show there is way more to the town than you would ever expect. Fargo was the birthplace and gravesite of Roger Maris. He is buried in the catholic cemetery in Fargo. They also have a small museum dedicated to him as well.

We spent the yesterday touring sites of Fargo. I will say before we arrived I assumed Fargo would be similar to the town I grew up in. A little older not very progressive. Boy was I wrong. What a great city with fun things to do. One of our adventures was Bonanzaville. This is a museum and historic village run by the Cass County Historical Society. They have authentic log cabins, church, train depot, courthouse, school etc. The museums include a vintage car collection, vintage airplane collection, law enforcement museum and a museum regarding the history of Fargo. Which, BTW includes a pretty racy past.

Melvina Massey came to Fargo at the age of 53 destined to make her mark in Fargo history. As a result of the train coming through Fargo it was becoming a very populated area. Melvina was a very savvy business woman and opened a house of ill-repute. According to history it was one of about 6 in Fargo but by far the busiest. Several interesting facts about Melvina, she was African-American and at the time she was only 1 of the 2 African Americans in Fargo. Also when she opened the Crystal Palace, she sent engraved invitations to all the businessmen in Fargo letting them know she was open for business. Her clientele from the very beginning were the upscale gentleman of the town, making her a very wealthy woman. And no the picture of Fred in jail is not a result of visiting the Crystal Palace. And no as the judge I did not put him in jail.

One of the nicest things that can happen when you are traveling is to spend time with friends. Our friends in Fargo cooked for us on Sunday night and then last night we had a good old steak cookout. Two home cooked meals in a row. What a treat. We bid farewell to our friends and Fargo this morning on our way for more adventures.
