Today we left Columbus on our journey further north. Just as an FYI we pulled into the hotel parking lot and one of the pick-up trucks has a snow plow still attached. Makes me question the decision to do a northern type trip.
We have a friend in Tampa that had commented on the fact that we have visited a significant number of graves or “burial sites” on this trip. I cannot argue that we have in fact done that, not by design it just happened. So not to disappoint, today we went through Marion Ohio. For those of you who are not history buffs Marion is the birth place of our 29th president Warren G. Harding. And it just so happens the cemetery in the center of town has the gravesite of WAIT FOR IT…. Caroline Phillips. You say to yourself “WOW I did not see that coming. Who the heck is Caroline Phillips?” Apparently, Warren was somewhat of a philanderer and had many mistresses and one-night stands. However, Caroline was the one who blackmailed him into keeping her silent. The affair lasted about 15 years and ended in 1920. This was substantiated by letters that were later discovered that concluded Phillips was the love of Harding's life—"the enticements of his mind and body combined in one person". You never know this may be a question on Jeopardy. By the way Harding is also buried in that cemetery.
We went to Grand Rapids Michigan today, the birthplace of yet another president, Gerald R. Ford. He is the only President of the United States who was not elected by ballot for his terms as either President or Vice-President. The museum is pretty cool and as you can see in one of the pictures Fred is posing with a sculpture of Ford as a football player. The sculpture is made of junk! I on the other hand am in the cabinet room seated at the chair of the President.
We re continuing to head north. I know you are all wondering how we are ever going to get to Vegas going north. Fred asked and was told, “When you get to the big bridge, turn left.”
Thank you to all of the veterans for your service.
