NCR -Convention Bound-Day 3

Hi Everyone,

Hope all is well. We made it to Bryson City and we are staying in a lovely cabin. The problem with our lovely cabin is to get to it you go up a mountain on dirt and gravel roads. Now for some of you that may not be a bad thing, however, for us city "folk" that is not something we are used to. However, I will tell you the only thing we hear are the birds chirping. BTW on our way to the cabin we drove over a snake.

Yesterday on our way here we went through Macon Georgia and Athens Georgia. Macon Georgia for those of you who don't know is where Greg Allman, Duane Allman and Barry Oakley are buried. I have to say the picture on the Roadside America app was way better than mine so I included that picture for all you Allman fans. I know it would seem Macon would be known for something more exciting than the Allman Brothers. It is and that brings me to the next site from Macon, we saw our first "MOMument" of our trip. It is a tribute to the women of the civil war. One side is a mother teaching her child and the other side is a nurse caring for one of the men. Just an FYI speaking of nurses a little something I forgot to tell you all yesterday. Clara Barton was a nurse during the Civil War and was at the Andersonville POW camp. Now you ask why that is important, well when I was in the sixth grade I did a book report on Clara Barton, while I thought I wanted to be a nurse at that point in my life, the book report solidified my career choice. Anyway I digressed. One other site in Macon is the Bear of Terror. The bear is the mascot for Mercer College. Pretty scary bear, but a beautiful campus!

We also went through Athens Georgia. This is the home of University of Georgia. There are bulldogs everywhere. And in keeping with graves we tried to visit the mausoleum for the dead bulldogs. The complete line of the dead Georgia bulldogs are entombed in a wall mausoleum at Stanford Stadium Problem for us, they are doing construction on the stadium thus we were not able to get in and get the picture. Sorry, My opinion, the Bear of Terror is a way better mascot than the bulldog!!

However we were able to get a photo of the only double barreled cannon in the world. The idea behind the cannon was for two cannon balls to go whizzing through the air with a chain stretched between them so as to create as much mayhem as possible on the other side. The idea being two cannon balls at one time would be far more efficient, and reduce some of the smoke and racket caused by the more frequent one ball cannon fire. Unfortunately, no one could figure out how to fire both barrels simultaneously and the survivors of the experiment had great difficulty recruiting new testers. Go figure it, many of the testers didn't quite make it. This could be why this is the world's only double barreled cannon.

Speaking of smoke, Fred channeled his inner pioneer and he built a fire last night. Unfortunately we couldn't figure out how to make the grill work thus we hope to grill our steak tonight!!!

We plan on venturing out today on the dirt and gravel road and see what treasures Bryson City holds. Take care and more to follow!
