Greetings from Americus Georgia. Americus is famous for many things but one of the little-known facts is Charles Lindbergh came here to buy one of his planes. According to local legend before he flew solo across the Atlantic he flew solo here in beautiful Americus Georgia. This was where he flew solo the first time. So begins our little factoids.
To be clear before we arrived in Americus we had quite the adventure. Our first stop was in Bronson Florida where we visited Bo Diddley’s grave. Little known fact he lived in Archer Florida hence the reason he is buried in Bronson. We also visited the grave of Bill Duggan in Moultrie Georgia. You ask who is Bill Duggan? He was a circus owner who died in 1950. Nancy, the baby elephant followed him to the hospital the day he died. So it would only be logical that his son had a 5.5 by 7 foot elephant tombstone made. I did a little research on Bill, because it's a long drive, and apparently the circus never opened. Makes you wonder why he had an elephant.
In Lloyd Florida we were able to get a picture with Johnny Donutseed (very creepy statue) He is eating a donut and drinking a cup of coffee. Doesn't get any better than that.
Today we visited the National POW Museum in Andersonville Georgia. The Museum is on the site of the Andersonville POW Camp that was used during the Civil War. It is a National Historic Site and incredibly well done. The camp was open for 14 months, housed over 45,000 prisoners and of that almost 13,000 died in the camp. This is also a National Cemetery. Not only are the graves of 13,000 prisoners it is also used for veterans and their descendants today. If you are ever in the area, it is worth the time to visit the museum and tour the camp.
Across from the cemetery is a little town and they have a museum with the nicest guy as the greeter. That’s worth the trip as well.
AND if you are in Americus Georgia, do not miss the opportunity to go to Plains Georgia. Hometown of Jimmy Carter. Peanuts Galore. Tomorrow we work our way to Bryson City.
