There is no central record of which chips and tokens have been discontinued (at least that I can find). In Nevada, casinos fill out a form when they intend to discontinue a chip, Gaming Control approves it, the casino publishes its intent to redeem and discontinue the chip, then you have a short window to cash them in or they are worth zero at that casino. At that point, the casino is required to destroy the chips *sniffle*.
