The Purple Grackle, Purple Krackle, Purple Crackle - no matter what you call it or how you spell it -it was an old Illegal Club located in East Cape Girardeau, IL The Crackle originally opened on Christmas Eve 1939 and finally closed about 10 years ago after being operated in various capacities by 3 generations of the Pearce family.

The chips shown below are not from the original Casino but were probably used for some purpose at a later date. Still these are interesting bits of history from this famous Illegal Casino.

These chips have the Purple Crackle Club East Cape Girardeau, ILL. on the front and various numbers on the reverse. *Note the 3 letter abbreviation for Illinois - ILL. The current 2 letter abbreviation of IL. was put in use in 1963. I do not know exactly when these chips were in use.
