So the counterfeit process was to take a legit $1 chip (pic below, from the Chip Guide), then add black paint and the 3 red painted insets, to make it look like 3 sets of inserts, then scratch off the $1 and draw a "100" in its place.

That's a lot of work, though a $99 profit if successful! Very interesting!
