You are rxactly wrong - these self-slabbers have no credibility in rare coins or sportscards and are a joke.

The "real" slabbers would add credibility to chips that are rare and expensive and would convert them to "investment grade" collectibles with authenticity and grade guaranteed.

I don't have a dog in this fight, but that is my opinion.

Without the comfort of a legit slab there is no way I'd put any serious $$ into chips. Far too easy to counterfeit - - heck, the fakes even fool casinos.
