I don't know specifically what evidence Travis might have to support his claim, however one group he might be indirectly referencing are the collectors over at Poker Chip Forum and their friends. I'd wager that most folks over there don't collect singles (although many collect playable sets - a section of the hobby that may well be growing), but many do. Of those that do, unofficial polls there would indicate that the vast majority are younger than 50, and still most are younger than 40.

I'm not sure that I'd go so far as to say that there are more younger chip collectors than older, but I don't think his claim is entirely without merit - there are definitely younger collectors out there. Many of them simply choose to either not associate here/with the CCA, or they don't know about it at all.
