Yes you get text messages from the Google Voice number, in fact it includes a voice to text translator that sometimes works. I did something different, changed my home number to Google Voice (free after the initial transfer fee to port the number) and forward it to my business phone number, which is now a cell phone. Everything comes to one phone, no more landlines.

But for anyone else a disposable number is a good way to get calls, without handing over your real phone number. You might consider a disposable email account also...
