So I went to 3 estate sales today looking for jewelry and anything else that I could use (I buy all sorts of stuff at sales from outdoor bug spray to oil for the car to auto dish detergent for pennies on the dollar.) Today the first sale had a railroad trust plate that I was interested in and a stamp collection. I like to check out stamp collections since sometimes you run into one where there are uncancelled stamps. A few years ago I got a collection of $300 in face value for $50 and figured I was set for a while. Well I still have quite a few of them but most of the larger denominations are gone since it is really hard to put 10 - 5 cent stamps on an envelope and still have room for the address. So today I run into a collection but most that I see are cancelled. Then I see a bunch of books put out buy the post office in a large bag. It turns out that the PO also puts in all of the stamps made that year. I started doing a rough count and figure I can't lose if I can get them for $10-15. Then I find two small bags with uncancelled coil stamps in them so I toss them in. Then I find two large stamp books made for plate blocks (blocks of 4 stamps). The idiot that put the stamps in licked them and glued all of them right into the book! They are worthless now. So I dragged my bag of stamps and books outside and ask the guy collecting money for all of the stuff in the outdoor sheds where the trust plate is at. He said they had 3 of them but when he got there this morning all 3 were missing. Probably stolen overnight since they are worth at least $50-100 each and were stored outside. So I asked about the stamps and he says $15 - SOLD!!! I get home and start counting and each book has about 100 $.30 or so stamps EACH! Plus the stuff in the two envelopes. Grand total??? Over $425 in uncancelled stamps. I literally will probably never have to buy another stamp ever. You just never know what you will find at a yard or estate sale but the fun sure is in the hunt and sometimes you can win big. Here is what they look like:
