Interesting illegal Galveston ashtray

Doc Pugh sent me this picture of an ashtray out of this collection. It's a beauty and gives a name I wasn't aware of.

The address is the same as the "Twenty Seven-O-Nine Club" of the 1950s. I wrote about this place, and its larger than life owner Jo Jo Balch back in February. You can read about it here... http://www.thechipboard.com/archives/archives.pl/bid/399/md/read/id/1377019/sbj/illegal-of-the-day-texas-40/

If I had to guess, I think the ashtray probably pre-dates Balch's club. To me, it looks maybe 1930s-1940s. However it does give us a clue that the spot probably had a long reputation as a place of ill-repute.

Neat item!
