Well we made it to Kansas. For those of you who do not believe there is much to do in Kansas there are a tremendous amount of sights. For example there is the world’s largest easel. This easel holds a replica of the world’s largest Van Gogh, “Sunflower” for the sunflower state. The easel is in Goodland Kansas which is the center of the sunflower industry so it stands to reason the painting is in Goodland.
From Goodland we ventured to Colby Kansas where you will find the Wheat Jesus Billboard. This is a billboard with no words, only the head of Jesus sticking up from a wheat field grasping a shaft of wheat. A couple from Colby built and pay to keep it maintained and lit at night. Just a little tip it is the same on both sides so you can see it coming and going. Our picture did not turn out very well since it was raining.
Also in Colby is the “Spirit of the Prairie”. I have learned throughout the west there are “Mom-uments”. There is also a cult following of mom-uments similar to those that follow Muffler Man. The Mom-uments are monuments dedicated to the pioneer spirit of the women on the prairie. If you will recall I sent a picture of me with the woman who chopped the head of the snake off. Well that is a mom-ument. The one in Colby is of a woman waving off in the horizon with a child on her hip. As an added teaser there will be more mom-uments on the trip.
From Colby we visited Oakley. You guessed it there is a museum dedicated to Buffalo Bill. Seriously, no Annie Oakley museum, go figure. But as you will see by the photo I am attempting to save the buffalo that Bill is about to kill.
We went to Abilene, home of the world’s largest spur and the Eisenhower Library and Museum. If you ever have the opportunity to visit the Library, we would recommend doing so, and you get the added benefit of getting your picture taken with the spur. The Eisenhower’s had five sons, one became president of the United States, one was the President of University of Kansas and John Hopkins, one was an attorney, one the youngest pharmacist in the state of Kansas and the other was a VP of a bank. This from a family that was considered to be on the “wrong side of the tracks”. The museum has significant history and memorabilia from WWII. If you ever get there, be sure and see all of the medals and awards given to Ike as thanks for his participation in the war. For those of you who know me well I was particularly interested in the sword presented to Ike by the Sultan of Brunei, it has two diamonds one was about 10 carats and the other about 5. NICE
More to follow from Kansas and on to Missouri
