some of my experiences on eBay.
First and foremost, if you use a substitute image, it MUST be disclosed that the chip you are showing is a 'representation' of the chip you are selling. However, a very LARGE percentage of viewers will NOT bother to read your description and will pull the trigger based on the picture alone! This will be a return situation.
Secondly, if you use the poor scan and explain that your scanner sucks, a very LARGE percentage of viewers will NOT bother to read your description and will pull the trigger based on the picture alone thinking it is an error chip! This will be a return situation.
Your best solution is to get a scanner that best supports you in this hobby. And that is a scanner that uses CCD technology and NOT CIS technology. Read the specification details, only buy when it specifically indicates CCD (Charged Couple Device) scanning and ignore anything identified as CIS, even if it's FREE!!!!
