My Long Hand
It's been too many years now. I was 22 or 23 on my 3rd or 4th trip to Las Vegas. I'd seen the craps tables on the previous trips, and decided to learn the game. Checked out a book at my local library.
The Silverbird, I think it was. 25 cent table for sure. I'd read up on 75 cents on the line and $1.25 or 1.00 or .75 odds, all pay "2 and a Q".
I've got the dice, alone at the table, as the other players left after the 7 out that passed the dice to me. On my 2nd point, a Gentleman comes up to the other side of the table, whips out a band of 100 100's and starts playing cash on the don't. I kept making points. He kept playing more and more on the dark side. I found out how helpful it is for Luck's sake to have the Dealers/House rooting for you!
I made several more points. [Boy, this game is easy, how DO the casinos stay in business!] I eventually threw caution to the wind and had $3 on the line with ~gasp~ $5 odds. (betting a red chip, I must have been nuts!) As I'd read to do, I even took the dealers on the line with me for $1 a couple of times, Such an extravagance, must have been the dozen or so Tequila Sunrises I'd had during the evening, clouding my judgement!
The guy reached into his pocket and took out another band of Hundreds! And then Another!!! By now there were a few others who had joined the table (it was like 3am).
Cash on the Dark Side Guy was steaming mad, cussing and stammering, totally SURE I had to 7 out soon. He'd been at the table limit of $1,000, for several points by the time he got his seven out. I was up like $80-$100, he was down $20,000+.
I was making, say, $8 to $10 a point. (Hadn't learned Place bets or Come bets yet. And about to wet my pants at the thought of betting red chips.)
Just about the most fun I ever had at a craps table. Hooked me for life!
Steve
P.S. I've had other hands where I got tipped $5 by several other players on the table after a hot hand
