A couple of weeks back, I heard that the Gardens had opened its new casino building, so an evening trip was called for to see what surprises awaited.
The old structure, still known to most Californians as the Hawaiian Gardens Casino, has been reduced to rubble. Parking is still on the east side of the premises, but patrons have to walk under a long covered walkway to get to the new two-story building. Upon entering, I was struck by the elegant silver dolphins jumping out of the fountain in the lobby.
I exclaimed: "Quit hitting me, you stupid dolphins!"
Next it was time for a most important task: visiting the men's room. I was surprised to see goldfish in the lavatory sinks.
Then, on to the tables where I saw . . . nothing that looked new. So my next visit was to a cashier. By the way, the old casino had something like a half-dozen cashiers scattered about. This new one seemed to have only two cages, located side-by-side. I asked the cashier if they had any new chips out for the grand opening. "Yes, we have new $1,000 chips," she replied. Told her that was a bit steep, how about any lower denominations?
"Oh, yes, we have new $25's," she said, ruffling through her stock. "But I can't find any right now. Actually they look just like the other twenty-fives, but they are new!"
At this point I deduced I was speaking to Gracie Allen III, so I excused myself and asked a somewhat dour cashier at the second cage about new $25 chips. Told there were none.
Passed by a fascinating sign at one table, "English Only Must Be Spoken When Cards Are In Play." Felt like asking the idle dealer, "Por quë señor?"
And exited the building, looking for the volcano that used to be outside. Alas, it was gone, a victim of the construction. The only active volcano in California and reason to visit Hawaiian Gardens, and it was GONE!
Sometimes chip trips are just good for use of the men's room.

I STILL LIVED IN CARDIFF , CA AND A LONG HOLIDAY WEEKEND HAD ALLOWED ME TO PLAN A WEEKEND OF HARVESTING AND A VISIT WITH MY YOUNGEST SON IN FRESNO.
I LEFT THE SAN DIEGO AREA ON FRIDAY EARLY AND HEADED FOR THE PALM SPRINGS AREA. I CANNOT REMEMBER ALL OF THE CASINOS I HIT, BUT THE RED EARTH, AUGUSTINE, SPOTLIGHT 29 AND FANTASY SPRINGS WERE SOME OF THEM. WHEN IT STARTED GETTING LATE, I KNEW I HAD BETTER GET BACK ON THE ROAD.
I PULLED INTO BAKERSFIELD AROUND 9 OR 10pm THAT EVENING AND ASK A GAS ATTENDANT WHERE I COULD FIND THE GOLDEN WEST CASINO (NO GPS AT THIS TIME). HE GAVE ME THE DIRECTIONS AND I FOUND IT WITHOUT ANY TROUBLE, AND ON THE WAY I BOOKED MYSELF A ROOM FOR THE NIGHT.
WHEN I PULLED UP IN FRONT OF THE “GOLDEN WEST” I WAS SURPRISED, THE BUILDING WAS BUILT OUT OF SOLID STONE, I DID NOT GET THE HISTORY ON THIS, BUT IT WAS BUILT LIKE AN OLD TIME RANCHERIA.
INSIDE THE TABLES WERE VERY CLOSE TOGETHER MAKING THE CHAIRS VERY CLOSE TOGETHER, SOMETIMES CAUSING AN ALTERCATION BETWEEN PATRONS BECAUSE OF CROWDING AND NUDGING WHEN GETTING UP TO LEAVE OR USE THE RESTROOMS. I SAT DOWN BEGAN LOOKING FOR THE BEST CHIPS I COULD FIND; CONDITION WISE. SOME OF YOU MAY NOT HAVE KNOWN; THAT AT THIS TIME THEY WERE STILL USING THE MAISSON JOUSSAUDS CHIPS MIXED WITH THE GOLDEN WEST CHIPS. I GOT THE CHIPS I NEEDED IN ABOUT 2 HOURS OF PLAYING TIME, UNFORTUNATLEY IT COST ME A WHOLE LOT MORE THAN THE FACE VALUE I PAID FOR THE CHIPS.
NEEDLESS TO SAY I WAS VERY TIRED AFTER THE DRIVING, HARVESTING AND PLAYING FOR A COUPLE OF HOURS. I WAS GLAD I HAD BEEN SMART ENOUGH TO BOOK MY ROOM EARLIER. ON THE WAY OUT I ASKED THE CASHIER IF SHE HAD ANY OLDER CHIPS IN THE VAULT. SHE DID. I BOUGHT THOSE TOO. SMILING, I LEFT THERE VERY HAPPY EVEN THOUGH I LOST A COUPLE OF BILLS. NO I DID NOT BUY ENOUGH…REGGIE

MANY YEARS AGO I STARTED MY POSTING, BY POSTING “A SET OF THE DAY” I THINK I HAD ABOUT 300-400 SETS ALL TOGETHER. THAT WAS A LOT OF FUN BACK THEN. AND WHEN I STARTED DOING “A PAGE A DAY” I INCLUDED BETTER SETS AS A CATEGORY.
BUT NOW; RATHER THAN HAVING MY BETTER SETS CATEGORY, I WILL START HAVING A REGULAR SET OF THE DAY WITH MY OTHER FEATURES WHEN I DISPLAY A “PAGE OF THE DAY”.
