I saw him at the Comedy Castle in the 1980s before he was (excuse the pun) very big. I don't remember his show being profane. It stood out as one of my favorites, after Garry Shandling.
I think a good comedian doesn't require f-bombs. Swearing is often used to fill awkward gaps when someone doesn't have anything witty to say - it's like a musician who knows he can get a crowd excited by yelling out the city's name or by holding a single note instead of playing a complicated solo. My kids can tell you I am not offended by swearing; I just see it as a creative crutch.
