A couple of weeks back, I heard that the Gardens had opened its new casino building, so an evening trip was called for to see what surprises awaited.
The old structure, still known to most Californians as the Hawaiian Gardens Casino, has been reduced to rubble. Parking is still on the east side of the premises, but patrons have to walk under a long covered walkway to get to the new two-story building. Upon entering, I was struck by the elegant silver dolphins jumping out of the fountain in the lobby.
I exclaimed: "Quit hitting me, you stupid dolphins!"
Next it was time for a most important task: visiting the men's room. I was surprised to see goldfish in the lavatory sinks.
Then, on to the tables where I saw . . . nothing that looked new. So my next visit was to a cashier. By the way, the old casino had something like a half-dozen cashiers scattered about. This new one seemed to have only two cages, located side-by-side. I asked the cashier if they had any new chips out for the grand opening. "Yes, we have new $1,000 chips," she replied. Told her that was a bit steep, how about any lower denominations?
"Oh, yes, we have new $25's," she said, ruffling through her stock. "But I can't find any right now. Actually they look just like the other twenty-fives, but they are new!"
At this point I deduced I was speaking to Gracie Allen III, so I excused myself and asked a somewhat dour cashier at the second cage about new $25 chips. Told there were none.
Passed by a fascinating sign at one table, "English Only Must Be Spoken When Cards Are In Play." Felt like asking the idle dealer, "Por quë señor?"
And exited the building, looking for the volcano that used to be outside. Alas, it was gone, a victim of the construction. The only active volcano in California and reason to visit Hawaiian Gardens, and it was GONE!
Sometimes chip trips are just good for use of the men's room.

I HAD LEFT PENDLETON OREGON, AND WAS HEADED NORTH TO A FAMILY REUNION IN EASTERN WASHINGTON STATE. WALLA WALLA WASHINGTON WAS RIGHT ON THE WAY. AND EVEN THOUGH IT WAS STILL MID MORNING I THOUGHT I WOULD GIVE THIS PLACE A SHOT. HARVESTING IN THE MORNING SOMETIMES IS NOT SUCCESSFUL, SIMPLY BECAUSE THE CASINOS DO NOT OPEN THEIR TABLES UNTIL AFTERNOONS.
WHEN I ARRIVED THE PLACE WAS EMPTY EXCEPT FOR TWO DEALER STUDENTS, AND ONE VETERAN DEALER. THE VET WAS TEACHING HIS STUDENTS THE FINE ARE OF DEALING BLACK JACK, I WATCHED THIS SCENE WITH MILD INTEREST FOR A WHILE UNTIL IT GOT BORING. THEN I SIDDLED UP TO THE BARTENDER; THE ONLY OTHER PERSON IN THE ENTIRE CASINO AND ASKED WHO I MIGHT I TALK TO ABOUT GETTING SOME REAL CHIPS FOR COLLECTION PURPOSES AND HE SAID THE DEALER THAT IS TEACHING THE OTHER TWO WOULD BE THE ONLY ONE HERE NOW. THAT DID NOT SOUND VERY PROMISING.
I WAITED UNTIL THEY TOOK A POTTY BREAK AND THEN ASKED THE DEALER IF I COULD BUY SOME CHIPS FROM THE TABLE. HE SAID, VERY QUICKLY, NO; I CANNOT SELL ANY OF THESE CHIPS. BUT; IF YOU WANT TO STICK AROUND TO 4PM I WILL BE ABLE TO. I WAS A LITTLE TAKEN BACK, AT THE QUICK REPLY AND NEGATIVE ANSWER, BUT I WAS GAMBLING BY STOPPING BY SO EARLY ANY WAY.
AS I STARTED TOWARDS THE DOOR, THE DEALER SAID HEY WAIT A MINUTE, I AM PRETTY SURE I HAVE SOME LOOSE CHIPS KICKING AROUND IN MY PICK-UP; IN THE PARKING LOT, GIVE ME A SECOND AND I WILL MEET YOU OUT THERE.
WELL, THIS WAS A LITTLE UNCONVENTIONAL, BUT I THOUGHT; A MEAGER SMALL HARVEST IS BETTER THAN NO HARVEST ALL. I ACTUALLY CAN NOT REMEMBER HOW MANY CHIIPS HE CAME UP WITH, BUT I PAID HIM FOR THEM AND PADDED THE PAYMENT WITH A TIP. I WAS VERY GLAD THAT HE FLAGGED ME DOWN BEFORE I LEFT, AND HE WAS HAPPY TO PICK UP A FEW EASY BUCKS. MANY YEARS AGO I STARTED MY POSTING, BY POSTING “A SET OF THE DAY” I THINK I HAD ABOUT 300-400 SETS ALL TOGETHER. THAT WAS A LOT OF FUN BACK THEN. AND WHEN I STARTED DOING “A PAGE A DAY” I INCLUDED BETTER SETS AS A CATEGORY.
BUT NOW; RATHER THAN HAVING MY BETTER SETS CATEGORY, I WILL START HAVING A REGULAR SET OF THE DAY WITH MY OTHER FEATURES WHEN I DISPLAY A “PAGE OF THE DAY”.
