Oddly Jim they will take up to 13oz retail or at the post office, but only online can ship up to 15.9. So once you hit 13oz it goes all kinds of other ways, more expensive, like Priority, flat rate, zone and there's some kind of box that you can't get at the post office but can order?
I also found that shipping a couple of pounds, UPS starts to become an option when I need a signature. It's $2.35 added for USPS.At that price, the two start to be the same. I'd have to have some database and cross reference all of that, because UPS charges $1 extra for "home" delivery. They are always finding a way to nick us.
UPS is automatically insured for $100, $1.60 for up to $300 (which is an easy one) 60c for each additional.
USPS: for the first $50.00 $1.70
up to $100.00 $2.15
up to $200.00 $2.60
up to $300.00 $4.60
each additional $100.00 $0.95
But UPS tracking is free. USPS now includes tracking, but raised their rates to cover it.
UPS free email notifications and online tracking. USPS pretty simple online tracking that shows scans and updates.
Pick and choose.
But why we can ship from eBay/Paypal, get a discount and ship between 13 and 15.9oz, but you can't walk in and ship that weight First Class is a mystery?
Warning, reusing a USPS box if it says Priority on it anywhere, will get changed to Priority service and the receiver will be billed. Cover all old writing. I think they don't appreciate some people who take free boxes and try to avoid the fees. Makes sense. But even with that, some are recycled boxes, mostly taped over and one word "Priority" anywhere on the box and zing it's going that way instead of ground.
The old trick, turning the box inside out went away fast. Boxes have more printing on the inside than on the outside. 3M used to make box restorer. I don't know if it's worth the expense. Spray any box tan and re-use. Too much effort for me, I just buy my own corrugated from U-line.
Now I have to remember to head out for some forever stamps. My previous roll is almost gone.
