I don't think well shaped wooden chips would had been used in play poker on the battle field around 150 years ago. I would think crude clay, lead, bone chips would had been the material of choice.

I'm sure I have many wood chips that I've picked up over the years, and I would bet they are under 100 years old (and they look similar).
