my family drove from S. Dak. to L.A. - new car but not AC. We stayed at a motel on Utah/Nev. border; rose early and drove to L.V. where we stayed at the Frontier (a shirt tail cousin was some kind of a manager there so we got a break). The adults hit the motel room sleeping until supper when we would eat and pull out for the night drive to L.A. avoiding the 100+ heat. So while they were in the room, I hit the pool and there were three of the most beautiful women I had ever seen and in 2 piece bathing suits. So I didn't get much swimming in as I enjoyed the scenery.
