Used a fresh cane (seasonally sold in local markets). Never had the heart to chop it down but eventually a winter windstorm blew it over. It grew back for a year or two but our dry weather eventually did it in! There actually was a small cane field a few miles from my house - land eventually taken to build another school. We need sugar, not schools!
