My grandfather worked for L.A. Times for over 40 years into the 1980's.

Part of what he did later in life was collect the money from Newspaper machines..he would have bags and bags of change, and some of the coins were red.

I remember he said those were used by the newspaper delivery people to open up the machines to load the papers each day.. so they knew it wasn't from the people buying the newspapers..
