Fred Holabird's Auction Catalog for his sale September 30, and October 1 & 2 features an extraordinary collection of Montana Chips that are a new type of chip that I designated as "Trade Chips." With Montana's quasi-legal gambling status throughout the state's history, many merchants who featured gambling in their operations used a 39mm size "chip" with good for in trade values. These featured different "trade" values but were different only in color. They are stackable like chips and certainly could be used as such, but their "good for" designations served to avoid their becoming used as evidence for gambling. Hunt and Co. of Chicago featured them in their 1930-40 catalogs and made a big deal of their being "Poker Chip Size Trade Checks in Color". Based on the large number of these rare pieces in the Robert Svoboda collection (acquired over 50+ years of collecting Montana) it became evident that they were a stand in for poker chips in my opinion. Lots 2653 to 2693 feature these and other Montana chips. Find the sale at FHWAC.com and check out these items.
