There is no universally accepted meaning for OBSOLETE in the chip collecting community. There are generally two widely accepted definitions: (1) The chip is no longer in use (available) at the casino; and (2) The chip no longer has any face value. The first definition is more aligned with collectors, collectors want to collect chips and if the chip is OBSOLETE, then they can no longer get the chip at the casino because it is not currently in use. The second definition is more aligned with dealers or investors ... the chip is OBSOLETE if I can no longer turn in the chip at the casino and get cash. Since the ChipGuide is mostly for collectors, the ChipGuide is using the first definition. A chip is obsolete if the casino is closed or if the casino is still open and the casino is no longer using the chip, usually because it was replaced with a new rack.
There are exceptions, of course. For example, some Limited Edition chips may had never been in use. Consider this a first step on our way to a more complete definition of obsolete that encompasses all casino collectibles. Your suggestions and opinions are welcome.
