A GUEST AUTHOR’s HARVEST STORY

h2] The Riviera (Florida)

By:James Eric Freedner

Here’s one I don't see on the Chipguide Florida page: The
illegal Riviera that was on one of the Sunny Isles near
Hallandale.
Red chip, 3 light blue inserts, hot-stamped "R" with
an odd hearts-and-squares mold.
The Riviera holds a special place in my memory: it was the
first casino I ever saw! I must have been about 6 years
old and visiting with my grandmother and grandfather, who
took my parents and I from their home in Hollywood to Miami
Beach via A1A. And we passed this creepy boarded-up old
building where the road going down the peninsula was fenced
off with a big chain between posts. My grandparents said
it was a casino that had been owned by gangsters, and it was
now deserted.
The building stood for quite some years (wonder who paid the
property taxes?) but became damaged in various hurricanes,
and by around 1964, I think, it was torn down. Don't
know what's there now as we moved from Florida in 1965.
Around 55 years passed, during which time I forgot the name of the
old casino, but eventually I took an interest in collecting
chips and decided to research it. "Riviera" it
was, same name but presumably not ownership, as another
Riviera Hotel in Miami Beach.
And when this chip came up on eBay, I decided to bid on it – and won!
A "red" chip would today be a $5 gaming piece, but I
don't know how it was played in the old days.
Reggie
- don't know if this counts as a "harvesting
story" but you are welcome to use it if you
wish.
J.

PERSONAL HARVESTING STORIES

ROBINSON RANCHERIA NICE, CA

By:RICHARD “REGGIE” GUMMER

ROBINSON RANCERIA IS TUCKED AWAY AT THE TOP OF THE CLEAR LAKE IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA, JUST A FEW MILES FROM HIGHWAY 101. I HAVE OFTEN WONDERED ABOUT THE THESE TITLES “RANCHERIA’s”. THERE IS A COUPLE OF THEM IN CALIFORNIA, NOT SURE ANY OTHER AREA HAS THEIR CASINOS CALLED RANCHERIA.
WE WERE DOING OUR NORTHERN CAL AND OREGON MONTH OF RV’ing. WE STOPPED THERE WITH THE INTENTIONS OF HAVING A BITE TO EAT; IT WAS GETTING ALONG ABOUT DUSK AND THEN DOING A QUICK HARVEST AND LATER LOGGING ANOTHER 100 OR SO MILES WHEN HIGHWAY 101 WAS NOT SO BUSY. WRONG! NANCY GOT INTO HER SLOT MOOD, AND I FOUND ONE OF THE WILDEST POKER GAMES I HAD SIT IN, UP TO THIS DATE. WE HAD A COUPLE OF DRUNK PLAYERS AND IT WAS CRAZY. I KEPT THINKING SOONER OR LATER I WAS GOING TO CASH IN ON ALL THIS. WRONG AGAIN! WELL, AT LEAST I GOT THE INFO ON HOW TO GET THOSE ELLUSIVE 25c CHIPS OUT OF THE PAIGOW TABLE WITHOUT ACTUALLY PLAYING.
THE REST OF THE HARVEST WAS FAIRLY EASY, AND IF ANY OF YOU ARE FAMILIAR WITH THIS CASINO AND THEIR CHIPS YOU KNOW THEY HAVE A LARGE AMOUNT OF VARIATIONS. THIS IS WHAT I WAS DOING WHEN I WASN’T IN THE HAND. I WAS CHECKING THE CHIPS FOR THE VARIATIONS SO I WOULD NOT LEAVE THERE WITH ALL THE SAME “TYPES.” WINK WINK.
UNFORTUNATELY, MY SHIP NEVER ARRIVED, I WAS UNSUCCESSFUL IN WAITING OUT THE DRUNKS AND I DROPPED A COUPLE OF BILLS. BUT, PENNY WISE AND POUND FOOLISH, HAS ALWAYS BEEN A GOOD EXPRESSION TO DROP WHEN YOU ARE A LOSER DURING WILD GAME AND IN A HARVESTING MOOD.
I DID GET ENOUGH CHIPS FROM THIS PLACE TO LAST MANY YEARS. NANCY AND I, REPOSITIONED THE RV UNDER SOME TREES, AND LEVELED IT; AND SPENT THE NIGHT IN ROBINSON RANCHERIA’S PARKING LOT…REGGIE

A PAIR TO DRAW TO

I am always trying to put things together that have some semblance of balance. Of course, that will always be in the eye of the beholder. Some of these may attract you the collector a little or a lot, no matter which way it attracts, please know I am always trying to help you out, with items you want at price that is fair. For now, I am going to do them every week, but as an unscheduled surprise feature…Thanks for looking. Reggie

If you have some ideas about compatible pairs please send them in to me. If it is possible and I happen to have the two, they will be put on the docket...reg

MY COLLECTION LIBRARY WEB SITE

HOME OF 4500 TRADERS

Starting in January 2016, I have listed everything I have (all of my excel inventory +) on the collection library trader/for sale. Of course, many of you did not know that my previous listings were items I had more than one of. Now, everything; even the ones I only have 1 (one) of will be listed. Please know; none of these are from my personal collection. One more important point while searching for chips on my CL site; there are two settings for viewing my chips. One is a simply a long, long list of pictures and descriptions. Two is by Country/City/State/Casino alphabetical. You may request to change this at any time. And when you do I will leave it on that setting for a couple of days, or whatever you request within reason, before I change to help another chipper’s request.
Follow This Collection Library Link To Approximately +/- 4500 Trader Chips >>>: http://www.collectionlibrary.com/Index.asp?EvApp=mls.5117&sPageName=MyTraders
This will cause more work for me, and along with that will be the possibility of more errors, and chances for items to slip through the cracks. So, I apologize in advance for the times I do not clear off a listing after it has been sold. Also, on the other side of coin, there will be times I will find a very nice item that I had forgot to put on the “Collection Library” when I first got it. And now I am listing it just when you started looking for it.
*On the subject of trading, please know: When you spot something on my CL Trader/For Sale list that you really want, I need to get something that I can put into my collection, also; or it will be a cash sale. Because, to take in trade something I will in turn have to sell, (that is already in my collection) requires me to work twice as hard to complete the original transaction.
The total amount of chips listed on this site as traders and for sale are approximately 4500. This of course will fluctuate up and down, however this number should afford most collectors looking for a piece to put in their collection at least an opportunity to see a few chips not often offered.
Thanks for taking your time to read over this post, Reggie
