Years back, in the mid 70s, my phone bills would show long distance calls to
numbers that I'd never heard of. When I'd call the phone company, they'd
tell me the name of the person, etc. and I'd respond that I'd never heard of
them. Places like Fayetteville, Indiana, Canandaigua, NY, Modesto, CA, etc.

After several months, I called after receiving the latest bill with more charges,
the gentleman I was talking to made a remark about the calls. I responded
that he should know I'm not making the calls since the phone company had
obviously tapped my line. He was taken back and asked for an explanation,
to which I replied that I would always hear a click when I'd pick up the phone
to make a call. I remember him saying, "Are you kidding? Haven't you
heard of Nixon and Watergate? That's not allowed these days." He said
he was going to check on something and would call me back.

When he called back, he told me that someone nearby had tapped several
phones beside mine and made countless long distance calls that were billed
to everyone else. He told me that had I not accused the phone company of
wiretapping, it might have taken a lot longer to catch the person.
