The Mint was a California cardroom that I found still had an active license and address in Porterville in 2009, so on my next travels to the central valley, I made a point of detouring to West Morton Avenue near downtown Porterville. But when I got there, I could not find it. (The cardroom, not Porterville; this is not a Twilight Zone episode.)
A year passed and I gained information on a new address for the Mint, so back I went to Porterville, this time to find: a residential house, garage open, somebody inside but obviously not playing poker. I left without stopping.
Yet another year, and this time I saw that The Mint was now listed in the state records as being on West Olive Avenue. Too crazy! Another journey out there -- and this time I found it -- a cardroom in a small strip mall. Going inside, I saw just two tables, card players at only one. But there was a cage staffed by an elderly gentleman who I took to be James Podergois, shown on state records as the owner.
I asked him if I could please buy some chips, and he looked rather sadly at me and said, "Today I'm giving out free chips." And he rummaged around and handed me a few green $1 chips, a couple of red fives, and to my surprise, a black $100 chip, with this admonition: "Don't ever come back here and try to cash these in."
I replied, "'Cuz that would be cheating. And I don't cheat!"
At which a broad smile crossed the man's face as he said, "You got it!!"
A year later, I drove back to Porterville - but the cardroom was gone, never to re-open. I will always treasure those chips, and the courtesy of an elderly casino owner on obvious hard times.

The Rise and Fall of Tribal Administrator Rodney Martin ...
By Carolyn Yeager Here is the story, as best I can put it together from the record of the Porterville Recorder, of Rodney Martin’s career with the Tule River Indian...

SPIRIT MOUNTAIN CASINO IS LAID OUT BEAUTIFULLY ADJACENT TO A MAIN ARTERY THAT TAKES YOU BETWEEN PORTLAND AND THE OREGON COAST. I WAS JUST OVER ON THE COAST AND HAD VISITED THE MILL, THREE RIVERS & CHINOOK WINDS CASINOS EARLIER. I BELIEVE I HAD A RESERVATION FOR THE SPIRIT MOUNTAIN HOTEL AT THE TIME.
I NEVER REALLY DO MUCH LOOKING AROUND ON THE FLOOR OF THE CASINOS, I ALMOST ALWAYS HEAD STRAIGHT FOR THE POKER ROOM IF THEY HAVE ONE. SPIRIT MOUNTAIN AS I REMEMBER WAS AHEAD OF THE THEIR TIME. THE HAD ROULETTE, CRAPS AND PAIGOW AND ALL OF THE HIGH PERCENTAGE TABLE GAMES. IT WAS ONE OF THE LARGEST INDIAN CASINOS I HAD EVER BEEN IN. OF COURSE, THIS WAS WAY BEFORE I WENT TO FOXWOODS AND MOHEGHAN SUN.
THE POKER ROOM WAS HAVING A TOURNAMENT AND AS I REMEMBER. IT WAS A DIFFERENT GAME LIKE 7 CARD HI-LO SPLIT 8 OR BETTER. I ALMOST CASHED, I THINK I WAS EITHER THE BUBBLE BOY OR NEXT TO THE BUBBLE.
LATER AFTER I HAD MY POCKETS FULL OF THE CHIPS I HAD NEEDED, I SAT IN A HOLDEM GAME. THE END OF THE STORY IS THAT I RECEIVED A PLAYERS SHARE OF A BAD BEAT JACKPOT. HERE IS HOW IT WENT DOWN AS BEST AS I CAN REMEMBER. A HAND WAS DEALT, FLOP CAME WITH TWO ACES, THERE WAS ONLY ONE BETTER AT THE TIME, THEN ON THE TURN THE THIRD ACE CAME, AND THEN (DID I MENTION THIS WAS 3-6 LIMIT GAME)THERE WAS THREE BETTING & CALLING UNTIL ONE YOUNG MAN SAID IN DISGUST I KNOW I AM BEAT AND THREW HIS PAIR OF POCKET JACKS IN THE MUCK. THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN THE LOSER TO A BAD BEAT. THE POCKET KINGS WENT ON TO LOSE THE HAND AND THE OTHER PERSON IN THERE HAD THE FOUR ACES WITH A QUEEN.
THE KID THAT THREW HIS HAND IN WAS SICK…I BOUGHT HIM A COUPLE OF DRINKS AT A QUIET LITTLE BAR NEAR THE POKER ROOM…TALKED HIM OUT OF HIS MISFORTUNE…WENT TO MY ROOM AND WASHED THE DIRT OFF MY HARVEST OF CLAY TREASURES. I DID GET ENOUGH OF SPIRIT MOUNTAIN CHIPS THIS TRIP… REGGIE http://www.themogh.org/cg_chip2.php?id=ORGRSM

I am always trying to put things together that have some semblance of balance. Of course, that will always be in the eye of the beholder. Some of these may attract you the collector a little or a lot, no matter which way it attracts, please know I am always trying to help you out, with items you want at price that is fair. For now, I am going to do them every week, but as an unscheduled surprise feature…Thanks for looking. Reggie
If you have some ideas about compatible pairs please send them in to me. If it is possible and I happen to have the two, they will be put on the docket...reg

I will endeavor to provide these free personal chips shown below to everyone that makes even a minimal order. There are a few of other peoples personals, these were acquired by mistake or given to me by someone other than the sponsor of the chip. They need a good home, and to those of you that are thinking of having a personal chip made for the first time let me say it always a good idea. We have 2 or 3 people that make these within our club. This is always fun around a poker table, people are genuinely impressed with the fact that “you” have your own personal poker chip.
So let me elaborate a little more on the way you can own one or more of these chips shown below. First they are FREE to any one that makes a purchase.
Also, if you do not want to make a purchase and are more into trading, I will trade any personal chip for any chip in slightly used condition; that is not older than 6 months, common, or special it makes no difference. Please know I will trade personals for personals that I do not have.
Hope we can find some common ground to get these nice looking personals into your hands. Thank you for your interest in our ‘Very Fun Hobby” Sincerely, Reggie
