Howdy did an interesting article in the Club magazine about 1965 slot tokens. These PE (Product Engineering) tokens were made using a powdered metal process in my town of Portland, Oregon. They had a shiny plated finish, usually chrome.
Most 1965 tokens were made by Franklin Mint but there were a dozen or so different manufacturers competing to make these early tokens. Since US silver dollars were rapidly disappearing into the melting pot, the casinos needed private tokens to replace them.
The odd 1965 tokens from makers other than FM are becoming really scarce now that metal slot tokens have all been replaced by paper vouchers.
