What the story does not tell you is how much Trump invested in the casinos to begin with. If they cost him $500 million then a $39 million return would be OK. Of course he also lost the $500 million or whatever it was when they did the bankruptcies. If you are willing to invest you deserve the rewards but I am not saying that it was fair to the other stockholders.
