My Opinion:
This shoe chip was made early c1880 and was an early clay chip NOT made from a mold or a stamp in fact each chip design was made by hand like an Ivory chip only in clay before the curing process was complete. I suspect the design was NOT placed on the chip by an "experienced scrimshaw Ivory expert" and they would have to be "etched" in a timely manor quickly by an artist before the chip cured. As a result each chip is slightly different from the next and no two chips are 100% exactly alike.
Just my opinion, if there were 100 made - there are 100 slight variations of the same design... and several others.
