What has happened is your red rose was a hybrid tea rose. It died and the root stock has taken its place. It happens a lot with hybrid tea roses. The rose is grafted onto root stock from a different rose, usually a much inferior rose, and if that grafted rose dies, you will then have the rose from the root stock take its place.
