I have never attributed Barney Dice or Chips to Hot Springs. From documentation and interviews with his friends, Barney Levine always operated out of Little Rock.
Barney Levine was a well known bookmaker, first indicted in Little Rock for gambling in 1936 where he was said to be an operator of the club called Daute's Inferno, with a Little Rock address. In 1955 he was called to testify in Terre Haute, Ind. for a Grand Jury case that investigated illegal bookmaking in 43 states, Cuba and Canada. During this, he said he operated the Westwood Club in Little Rock. He was later subpoenaed in 1961 to testify before the McClellan Senate Hearings, along with Owney Madden. FBI records reflect that during the 50s and 60s Levine used a wire service from Las Vegas rather than the New Orleans wire that Hot Springs used. During this period he had an employee in Vegas, Clifton Jones.
