When the NJ voters originally had their choice back in 1974 to approve legalized gambling in New Jersey, the NIMBY (Not In My Back Yard) voters across the state turned it down, The proposal was then re-introduced and put before the voters in 1976 restricting casino gambling to only Atlantic City and the measure was passed. I'm sure there are many anti-casino voters throughout NJ who still feel the same way today and who will not support it this time. South Jersey stands to lose badly if North Jersey casinos are approved because there is very little large industry in South Jersey as there is in the northern part of the state. A.C. Casino gambling industry is one of the largest employers in South Jersey and tens of thousands of casino workers have lost their jobs due to nearby competition in New York, Delaware and Pennsylvania. A.C. lost 2/3 of its tax ratables base after the four casinos closed and the other casinos have won tax appeals along with many other city property owners who successfully filed for property tax reductions. Borgata alone won a huge tax appeal case that A.C. cannot pay, so Borgata is currently withholding tax payments. A.C. is on the verge of declaring bankruptcy which is why the state may be taking over.
