Went by the Palomar Card Room in San Diego yesterday. A new sign taped to the front window states that the casino is "temporarily closed" but offers redemption for outstanding chips. Supposedly there will be someone on the premises from 10:00 AM to 3:30 PM daily. Those with chips must bring identification. Only checks will be issued for the redemption. The redemption period ends July 3rd after which time all outstanding chips become void.
Seems strange that the cardroom will actually pay someone to sit there for four months waiting for chips to come back. Apart from us collectors, I wouldn't think many people took them out of the building. And what is the employee doing during all the idle hours? Straightening out the books, maybe? Practicing solitaire?
If a casino redeems all its outstanding chips, it would seem to me that, even if it opened again in the future, a new set of chips would be in order.
