I am an IT professional who has designed, sold and implemented corporate backup and disaster/recovery solutions for over 30 years. Disk drives are mechanical devices that will, and often do, fail, even if they are not abused. Normal wear and tear and power fluctuations will cause disk drive failures. For PC users there are many inexpensive solutions - flash drives, external USB disk drives and cloud storage. I don't know why anyone would not backup their critical data.
