These are chips from a local Club that was opened here in Northern Kentucky back in 2002, and remained open through 2008. If was named after and was kind of a tribute to the old Tropicana Club from back in the old days of Newport. They had several blackjack tables set up in the new club, which is what these chips are from. There was no monetary value to them, obviously, since gambling is still illegal in Kentucky.
The new Tropicana was owned by a local restauranteer, named Jeff Ruby, who owns quite a few high end steak houses around the area. I was at the grand opening party the first night and it was quite an event. He had on the guest list a few of the Newport police officers that were involved in the “Ratterman scandal”, see attached link for the entire story on that. He had also invited Tito Carinci, who was the mastermind behind framing Ratterman.
Ruby was eventually tied up in a lawsuit over naming rights with the Tropicana against Tropicana Entertainment LLC., involving the “legendary Tropicana name.
