Another fake chip that made its way into the US around 2005, if I remember correctly, was one $1 MOP from the Union Club.
The Union Club was the only Cuban Club "for Cubans", all the Cuban $$$ people and government people belonged there. And, Union Clubs were found in most large cities. This was important because practically all the early rich Clubs were Spanish and non peninsulars were not allowed to enter.
The UC was the only casino/club from Cuba that made MOP chips. The only other MOP chips found until now were sets made for particular powerfull men. These chips brought in a lot of cash, the chips were beautiful and the chips were Few. Many types were made.
The fakes showed up imitating one particular group of Union Club MOP set. The fakes were awful, see below, front & back, and they had designs in both sides (UC never did that) and even worse, they had a denomination. Remember these chips were made for members to play games among themselves, poker etc. And the denomination of each chip was given at the time they were used and were differentiated by size and shape. Denominations would have hampered the players, as some players would use those same chips to play dollars and others to play millions.
See below. A really bad fake. But, since very few collectors had actually seen the real MOP's everybody purchased the fakes. They were going for $100/ea and no matter what the experts said, I believe they all sold. I still see them once in a while. See below, the real three chips and, below, THE CHIP, front and back!! Any body wants to buy one of my two fakes?, I will let you have it for $99.99 only (kidding of course)
Enjoy them.
