Difference, the schooner sits at the waterline and has shorter length masts. Schooners were never used to sail across oceans but as vessels for close shore sailing. A modern day example would be the Biloxi Schooner -- there's one near the Beau Rivage that has been turned into a day museum and it sails for special occasions.
