This example, along with the majority of the Cattleyas I maintain are mounted in wooden/plastic baskets, bare root... meaning there is no media around the roots as if it was growing on a tree limb in the wild. This method is not for everyone, though works well for me since I grow outside in USDA Zone 10a... I never need to be concerned with roots becoming too damp where thay can rot.
